One of the missions I enjoy is Kids’ Church. Occasionally, there is a lag time when we’ve finished our lesson or craft early and the children are restless. We love to play games but often don’t have the equipment we need. But there’s always chalk! I invented a way to make one of our favorite word games, Hangman, a bit kinder. Instead of a hangman’s noose, I draw a clay pot, so anytime the children don’t give me a correct letter for the puzzle word, I add a stem, leaves, petal, or center to the pot. This seems silly, I know, but it softens the idea of the Hangman game to one of life instead of death. Isn’t that what our faith and our children are all about? Join us sometime on Sundays and we’ll try and figure out a word of your choosing!

I have no idea where all these wires go to in my church office! One of these days I should trace them all to their source, but for now I’m content to know that my computer works and the phone rings. When did life get so complex? However did our ancestors survive without multiple cords? I’m sure there’s a metaphor here for connection to others and how it’s important to be in touch, but I wonder if we need to do this all the time. Perhaps that day of rest thing is more important than we know. Disconnecting once a week lets our spirit refresh and calm down from the multitasking world. It forces us to connect with people face to face and that’s a good thing. Thanks, God.

Somewhere in this photo is a chickadee eating at the new bird feeder outside my window. Putting the feeder behind the spider plant makes the birds more trusting and less anxious. I know this because it said so on the instructions! It took two weeks before the first bird showed up. First came the sparrows, then the chickadees, and today the cardinals. None stay for long but they are all refreshed and fed. I like to think that’s what happens when people come to church on Sunday. Refreshed and fed for the week!

Our annual Chili Fest is not just a judging of delicious meals in a crockpot. It’s also a chance to raise money for missions by auctioning off homemade pies. In addition, it’s a chance for people to get goofy!
Share a song, do a magic trick, or tell a joke! When the worlds seems topsy turvy, it’s always good to do something meaningful with a splash of fun. Come to Fellowship Hall on February 4, 5-7 p.m. and have your spirit lifted!

This Christmas I received a gift early. My wish was to wear matching shoes again. My fractured foot had finally healed. After 10 1/2 months in a camwalker boot I felt ready to ask Santa for this present. Well, the shoes are matching, but they are white athletic shoes, very comfortable but not quite the stylish ones I envisioned. I still have weeks of learning to walk again, but this season, I am also learning to wait. I think that’s what Advent is all about anyway; waiting in hope, love, joy, and peace for our Savior. I hope Jesus doesn’t mind that I’m also waiting for a different pair of matching shoes, size 11. I have big dreams and big feet to follow Christ.
